In an ever-evolving digital landscape, one woman set out to improve the quality of people’s lives by making cutting-edge technology more accessible. Meet Yasmin Alameddine ’12, Head of Operations, Machine Learning Platform & Infrastructure at Apple in New York City. From student leader to tech trailblazer, Yasmin largely credits her career path and success to the values, connections, and community at Havergal College.
Yasmin supports communications and operations for the engineers behind beloved Apple products and features. When asked about her driving force, Yasmin explains, “AI helps people do what they do quicker and better.” She describes the tech sector’s rapid transformation as a shift indicating an unprecedented opportunity to improve the quality of people’s lives. “Things are at an inflection point right now”, she notes. “Other industries, like healthcare, are trying to figure out how to incorporate artificial intelligence.” To show what this looks like in practice, Yasmin gives a real-life example of someone with a speech impediment. Did you know that Apple users at risk of losing their ability to speak can use Personal Voice, a feature that creates a voice that sounds like them? When she talks about making a real impact in people’s lives, this is what Yasmin means.
Considering her journey to where she is today, Yasmin reflects on the intangible aspects of a Havergal education. “The confidence-building, the critical thinking, the work ethic—I didn’t realize it then, but the lessons I learned at HC were the stones that laid the foundation for how I navigate today’s tech world.” As a young woman in a field traditionally dominated by men, Yasmin affirms, “Any room I enter, I know I’m meant to be there.”
Looking back, Yasmin underscores the importance of community building and fostering connections. She expresses her gratitude for the lifelong sisterhood and friendships forged at Havergal. The women she met as a teenager are still by her side today, supporting her as they always have through life’s ups and downs.
“Building a strong and close-knit community is key. It’s what makes us feel connected and supported. Make the effort to build and nurture your relationships.”
Beyond her immediate circle, Yasmin also the wider Havergal community’s role in her development. She explains, “Though Havergal equips us with the tools we need to succeed, we must be humble enough to realize that we don’t know everything.” The Havergal network is overflowing with industry experts ready and willing to share their knowledge. Yasmin advises, “Book the coffee chat, keep learning, and find ways to stay up-to-date and relevant.”
Yasmin’s journey exemplifies how a Havergal education can lay the foundation for lifelong success. As a final takeaway, Yasmin the power of having a robust network. “Building a strong and close-knit community is key. It’s what makes us feel connected and supported. Make the effort to build and nurture your relationships.”
