Forty-nine of us remain active and in communication. Rosemary Elder Dick’s masterful update of school files revealed that there have been 103 in our class registered as coming and going over the years. Of that number, 21 are known to have died. 33 are declared lost either by their own volition, frequent moves or loss of communication. The connected 49 all seem to be active and busy in their retired lives.

The 13 ‘lifers’ are now honoured as ‘Marguerites’.

Anne Carter divides her time between her homes in New Zealand and Canada. Paige Wadsworth McDermott’s home address is Lakefield, but her happy place is her cabin at Waskaganish, Quebec. Professors Ann Hutchison and husband James Carley spend time at their apartments in Oxford and Toronto. Both are distinguished medievalists and received honorary doctorates from St. Michael’s College, U of T – the first married couple ever to be so honoured by that college.

Mary Krug Ndlovu had a memoir of her many years in Zimbabwe published there. She will attend its launch in Harare, sponsored by the Canadian Embassy, and then go on to Bulawayo.  She hopes to make a visit to Toronto at some point. Rosemary Elder Dick made a grand tour of Italy. Cyndy Thomas Smith travelled in the Italian Lake District and Switzerland where even the Matterhorn remained snow-free in early October.

Patricia Weller Bent had a wonderful visit with Karen at her home in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Every day was perfectly planned by Karen. Pat’s negative preconceptions of Mexico City reversed when she saw its wonderful museums, pyramids, lakes, and gardens. She encourages us all to visit. Karen Taylor Alvarez is enjoying retirement, aquafit, learning bridge, and recently travelled to Colombia. Her four children and many grandchildren are now well launched, and son Eric is now CEO of their travel business.

Frances Smith Stronach cruised the Caribbean and went to Disneyland and Bermuda. Cathy White Loubser is based entirely in Holland. Diana Martyn trains horses at her Sutton farm. Ann Griffin McCall, in Montreal, rides dressage and paints. Judy Farwell also paints. Marg Keens Morden contemplates returning to Ottawa to be closer to family.

Our pandemic-delayed 60th reunion luncheon at the Rosedale Golf Club in 2022 resulted in another luncheon in 2023. Those gathered exhibited extraordinary emotional vitality. Illness has slowed down many of our classmates. Assistive devices are our friends, but we keep calm and carry on, depleted but not defeated, exhibiting that indomitable HC spirit. It was an extraordinarily upbeat day. To that end, our sponsor Anne Carter has again reserved, Saturday, October 19th, 2024 for a luncheon. We aim for at least 16, preferably more. Please note this and plan to join us. It is accessible.

The biggest announcement this year is from Willo Murby Heesom who is getting married at the end of September to Ian Thirlwell at St. Margaret’s Church, Chipstead, Surrey, U.K. Ian has been widowed for 18 years and Willo for 16 years. Willo looks forward to having companionship again and inheriting a super, welcoming family. Congratulations, Willo! Last January, as part of The Rotary Friendship Exchange, Mary Ann Edgar Rashleigh and her husband travelled to the Philippines and later stopped in Thailand to visit Bill’s relatives.

Penny Robinson Woodcock is downhill skiing, riding her carbon frame road bike, (super lightweight for speedier riders) and running/walking the pathway by The Bow River in Calgary, whilst always enjoying gorgeous scenery. Last April, Sally Taylor celebrated her 80th birthday with three friends. They travelled to five National Parks in Utah, thoroughly enjoying the amazing landscape. Sally’s quote: “It was a mind-blowing and gorgeous experience!” Keep trekking, Sally!

Judy Russell Strang went to Las Vegas with her son and granddaughter who had an invitation to compete in a dance competition- ridiculously expensive and Judy only saw her dance for 2 1/2 minutes! However, Judy found it well worth the experience while spending family time together. In February, Judy and her daughter went to San Jose to her grandson’s celebration to become a chiropractic intern. Fun, proud, grandmother news!

Another busy grandmother, Jane Musgrave Sainsbury, went on a Disney cruise with four grandchildren. Then she and her daughter and her two children enjoyed a fantastic time at Disney World. In March, Jane and her three sisters went on a cruise to Hawaii. Jane never stops! Joey Legate loves living in Iroquois Falls once again. She and her chum, Lynne Cowan Divine, are together constantly and try to stay out of trouble (still not easy even at 80 and 81!)

Leith Drury is as busy as a bee these days! Her latest passion is beekeeping. She says, “These insects are fascinating, productive, independent, non-aggressive and extremely fragile creatures.” Leith has two hives of her own – one in Caledon and one with her collective hive in downtown Toronto. Keep buzzing along, Leithie!

A few of us gathered at The Stoneagers’ Luncheon and enjoyed a little catch up.  As many did not read The Chronicle last year, it was a very special occasion for Ann Marshall Nicholl in 2023 when she received the ‘Maundy Money’ award from King Charles III in person, for service to church and community. This is an ancient ceremony celebrated each year. We are very proud of our classmates who, despite aging bodies, continue to do so much for other people. “Like a good book, a lasting friendship has many chapters.”

Mary Jean Borden Potter’s grandchildren visit from abroad. She is involved with the Royal Conservatory of Music and plays bridge in person and online. Hopefully in September we can see each other again at our planned get together on the 28th – save that date!

Alice Payne visited Yellowknife, celebrating the opening of the Yellowknife Historical Association. Among other historical items is a tribute to prospectors, including her father, Tom Payne. His story is included, with the claim posts from the Rycon claims he staked. These were right in the middle of the Con Mine. Now the two gold mines are closed, the head frames are gone, and the diamond mines are out in the barrens northeast of Yellowknife. No more tarpaper shacks, her old house is gone, and the town has 20,000 people instead of 2000!

Carolyn Purden Anthony and her husband moved to Victoria, BC to be closer to their three children and six grandchildren. She is volunteering long distance with the Rekai Centres in Toronto and the Brantford Potters Guild, and her pottery wheel is back in action. Beverly Bruce Hargraft travelled to Muscat, Oman for the World Association of Floral Artists (WAFA) Flower Show. She has been elected to the board of the WAFA representing Canada.

Pat Andrea Hornsby moved back from Picton, Prince Edward County in 2020 after her husband died. Thanks to some old friends, especially long-time Havergal classmates, she loves  being back in Toronto. Pat and two others travelled to Palm Desert to visit “snow bird” Mary Davis Nelles. Pat’s travelled to some wonderful places but says there is nothing like travelling with old school friends. Pat highly recommends it!

Jane Vickers Watanabe is living very happily in the lovely little town of Port Hope. This year she and Peter rented in Venice, Florida, from December to April. They enjoyed their time in the sunny and sometimes warm (from mid February on) weather. Peter plays at the croquet club while Jane socialises. She also belongs to the local quilt guild where she has made many friends. She has turned her lanai into her sewing studio, having made three quilts, a set of placemats and matching table runner, two wall hangings, and a set of coasters. She has begun three sweaters, finishing none. Peter has had two spells in the hospital, so that has somewhat limited other activities. She went to Moncton for the funeral of her very best friend of 63 years, Susan Shone.

Bonnie Soules Bedford-Jones was overjoyed two years ago with a visit from Boomer, her HC tennis partner Anna Sissons and her husband Paul Whalen now living on Vancouver Island.  Reconnecting with Latin students she taught over the years on the web has been a great boon! After she retired from teaching at Havergal, Bonnie and her husband, Bishop Michael Bedford -Jones, moved to Newcastle where she “kept my hand in” teaching ESL, volunteering at Odette centre and Bowmanville hospital and gardening with the Newcastle Horticultural Society. Tragically, Michael died of COVID in 2021. Dogs Islay, her fourth Bearded Collie, and Brigid are excellent companions.

Beverley Galley has moved to Burlington. She had knee surgery last fall and has recovered well. She visited Mary Davis Nelles in Palm Desert in March along with some other classmates. She is hoping that we can have some more fun events together this year and really enjoyed the 80th birthday party. We need more people to come out and have a great time together.

Mary Davis Nelles is selling real estate -with her younger partner who keeps her from retiring!  She spent two months in Palm Desert this winter and enjoyed a visit from some classmates. Mary is hoping that anyone who reads this class news and hasn’t had an email from her recently will get in touch – just drop her an email at nelles29@rogers.com. Help is needed getting our class list current so please send your info and if you are in touch with any other classmates send their email addresses as well.

Christine Tregunno Rudansky is living in Key Biscayne, FL and Manhattan. Retired from shoe design, graphic design work in 2018. Having a wonderful life & travelling with a brilliant  partner, Martin. They couldn’t be happier! Cheers to all her classmates!

Caroline Pack-Beresford Clarke writes, “Can it really be 60 years since we graced the hallowed halls as students? Who would have thought it! The reunion weekend at the school was, sadly, spread over four days which made it difficult for some, but a stalwart few, to attend everything. Nancy Milne, Pat Blachford, Gail Taylor Hamilton, Penny Hillary Heath-Eaves, Margaret Fisher Galbraith and I attended the Wednesday lunch along with our “Honorary ’63” member Di Nugent Cathro. Thursday evening saw a few boarders at supper, who then went on to revisit their old dorms and to share some stories with the present residents. Current boarders were amazed that what are now single rooms on the upper floors were, in our day, occupied by two or three prefects! Our main reunion was reserved for a splendid dinner hosted by Luba Frastacky and Cathy Fauquier at Cathy’s lovely home. It was a truly wonderful evening with 18 of us in attendance- Luba and I, Cathy, Nancy Milne, Penny Hillary Heath-Eaves, Pat Blachford, Jenny le Riche, Ginny Gooch MacEachern, Bev Clappison Maggiacomo (who both still fit into their tunics!) Margaret Fisher Galbraith, Jackie Cogas Smith, Sue Fisher Gustavison, Meredith Hill, Lyn Gaby, Gail Taylor Hamilton, and Carol Wistow Willer. It was particularly lovely to catch up with Margaret who came all the way from Nova Scotia to her first ever reunion since leaving Havergal. Several others sent their regrets including Nancy Robinson and Marilynne Car Nowell.  They were missed. I then spent the next three weeks visiting all my Havergal ‘families’ from boarding school days – Pat Blachford in Brampton, the Currellys in Port Hope, the Hillary clan in Ottawa and Joey Bell ’64 in Bracebridge.”

Luba writes, “For me, the most memorable part of our evening together was when we circled the dessert table and shared with our classmates what we had done in the intervening years. Lots of questions, lots of laughter, a few tsks and head shakes (but in a good way). Thank you to Cathy for volunteering her beautiful home and for being such a gracious hostess. It was also great to hear from Barb Avison Dutton and Cynthia Harding Leeper, both of whom we rarely heard from. On a final note: downsizing? Don’t forget the School Archives. Our box needs more content.”

Margaret Cowan-Slamen and her sister Cathy went to Winnipeg to celebrate their sister’s 90th birthday.

Diane Davies had family visit in September and is planning to go to Winnipeg and Winnipeg Beach with three cousins from the U.S. and western Canada. She is the temporary social convenor for the Wellesley Hospital Nursing Alumnae and is co-convening her Nursing class reunion. Judi Trevet Shields is planning a two month trip exploring small towns and villages in England, Scotland and France. Jo Henderson Nelson had a visit with Jane Watson in Stratford and saw two wonderful plays.

Joey Bell Brown had visits from Liz Ross Peter (Capetown, S.A.), and Caroline Pack-Beresford Clarke ‘63 (U.K.) and visited PEI, The Great Bear Rainforest B.C and Jane Watson several times in her new home in Stratford. Joey is hoping to move into the Bangor Lodge property on Lake Muskoka in June after four years in the making. Mary Glendinning moved to the country near Newmarket. She spent a week in Massif, Quebec, skiing and three weeks in NWT paddling the Horton River towards the Arctic. She is now planning a trip to Scotland to visit ancestors in April and to Haida Gwaii in July.

Jill Cantelon went on her first knitting cruise, across the Atlantic to Barcelona, followed by two months in Paris and then another knitting cruise to the Antarctic. Nancy Wells’ passion for running has changed her life. She has been to the World Masters Games in Oregon, South Africa, Finland and Italy, where she holds world records, many Ontario ones and has just set a Canadian record for her age in Tampa, Florida. Karen Madsen Pascal has retired as the Executive Director of the Henri Nouwen Society.

Thanks to all who sent in news! Remember that next year – 2025 – is our 60th reunion! We already have a great planning team who have volunteered to organize our celebrations. This year many classmates mentioned how much they are enjoying grandchildren and retirement. Janet Dunbar O’Meara had a visit with girlfriends from Ontario and Alberta. They’ve been getting together for over 30 years – the last 10 in Florida. Jill Thompson Andersons enjoys aquafit, bridge lessons, an art course, and later life learning classes. She chops vegetables for community meals with Daily Bread.

Kirby Chown visits Italy each year and is currently Chair of the Discipline Committee at the Ontario College of Teachers. Ann Barnett Love is writing a history of King Township. Jane Morley Cobden is living a “quiet happy life” in Halifax and enjoys having her granddaughter Livie nearby at Dalhousie. Virginia Evans writes that her life is “same old, same old” with “old” being the operative word!

Pat Carter Cooper spoke at the UK House of Lords in December about aiding women in Afghanistan and other regions with suppressed rights. She’s closing the Women’s Regional Network, addressing women’s security in South Asia. Married 55 years, she loves biking, hiking, and spending time with her six grandchildren. Linda Galley Stokes lives outside Atlanta, enjoying tutoring and golfing with her husband. Suzanne Knox Gammond and her husband are hoping to sell their farm to a neighbouring dairy farmer but with permission to continue living there as long as possible. She and their former German exchange student plan a horse holiday in May in Europe.

Catherine Eddy continues to explore Fredericton, and spends the summer at the beach in Bathurst with cousins and friends. She is on the board of two local museums. Ele Johnson Kyle lives in an Amica Seniors Independent Living apartment in North Vancouver in the winter and Kenora and Lake of the Woods in the summer. She has joined a choir – which provides challenge and joy! Donna Morris Clarke broke her leg in January 2023 followed by a long rehabilitation but is well again now. On a happier note, after her dog’s death, she acquired Rosie, a six-year-old rat terrier rescue.

In September Catherine Maunsell and Susan Sheen visited Donna for a few days and had fun reminiscing and laughing about Havergal days. Donna’s Christmas holidays were spent in Scotland meeting her son Dan’s future in-laws. Susan Sheen continues fostering puppies for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides with Maui – poodle puppy number twelve. Kitty Hay Kerr is still working part time at Women’s College Hospital. Her eldest granddaughter Stella is in grade 9 at Havergal – a four generation Havergal family.

We think especially of those in our class who have lost spouses and close friends this past year and for those who are experiencing medical challenges or have loved ones with ongoing challenges. Two comments from classmates, “We need each other even more” and “I’m so glad you’ve been an important part of my life.” How true!

Barb Smith Broadhead is busy with 3 grandchildren and trying to improve her bridge game and can’t figure out how she ever had time to go to work. Liebes Austin is recovering from a knee replacement and hopes to visit family in New Zealand in the fall. She regularly touches base with Jennie Stevens Ucar in Toronto. Jane Rowe Rees and Rosemary Campbell both live in B.C.  Jane’s daughter and Liebes’s daughter both teach at the same school. Jane still sings with the Victoria Gaelic Choir and is planning a motorcycle trip from Sydney to Melbourne in September.

Jill Dyer Hartley cruised from Barbados to Aruba for her 50th wedding anniversary. She visited her son and family in England and cruised to Antarctica and then to Rio and Lisbon. Sharman Scoon McKinnon is living in sunny Arizona. Her son lives in Wisconsin and her daughter and family are moving to Spain for a year. Lou Ann Fallis Ballard enjoys teaching French at St. Clement’s Early Learning and has signed up again for next year. She has two sons and three grandchildren.

Karen Corlett Druker lives in the Beach and has two sons, one in Boston and the other in Vancouver. Marian Smith spends time with her six grandchildren and boards dogs at her home in her spare time. Lea Aird Menear has grandchildren in Toronto, New York and Virginia and enjoys visiting all of them. They are all athletic and she loves going to their games. She and Sharman visited a friend in Maui in February. Gay Mills McNeil managed a week in Florida this winter.

Sue Greenfield Heathcote is still painting in Calgary and is planning a trip to Toronto this fall. Roslyn (Roz) Kaye Stollery had an exciting family trip to the Bahamas which included a car accident, a flat tire and a thunderstorm on a golf course. She also plays a lot of bridge really well, sometimes with Lea Aird Menear and Sue Azis Innes who don’t play quite as well! Barb Beatty Taylor marvels at how quickly her grandchildren have grown. She is grateful for the friendships formed at Havergal and has recently spent time with Roz, Lea, Gay, Sue, Lou Ann, Jennie and Liebes.

Sadly, Judith Hodgson Sanford, who is still practising craniosacral therapy in Oregon, lost her husband a year ago. She has two daughters, one in Rhode Island with two children and one doing an M.A. in California. Jennie Stevens Ucar has been retired for 10 years from education (as teacher and school principal) and has been busy with volunteering, and four grandchildren.

We are sorry to report that Pamela Deacon passed away this winter. She was a very accomplished diplomat. Jennie, who was with Pam at Neuchatel, sent a moving note reminding us of Pam’s kindness and generosity. With luck there will be no more bad news to report next year. I cannot believe this but 2026 will be our 60th reunion. Some of you have already said you are looking forward to it, but we hope everyone will try to come and catch up in person. We are so lucky to have each other.

Mary Redrupp James has been dealing with long term Covid since last summer, resulting in cancelled autumn travel plans. Mary and her husband wintered in Bermuda but both caught Covid again despite being mindful to mask in public. They are enjoying seven grandchildren, the oldest in first year at Tufts in Boston and the youngest in kindergarten in Connecticut. They are fortunate to have two sons and daughter living near their home in New Hampshire so they visit frequently.

Linda Leader Lownds caught Covid in December taking a couple of months to regain energy – especially challenging after losing her beautiful husky, Hola. To chase away winter blahs, Linda joined Tai Chi classes twice a week and also adopted a new household member, Goth, a five year old Husky who’s super attached to her already. Linda enjoys visits from good friends to her home in Kincardine. Daughter Jody was about to participate in the Boston Marathon at the time of writing.

Joan Gillespie Pottinger retired over 10 years ago from a two term provincial political career she took up after another lengthy career in market research. Joan moved from West Vancouver into the Kits area of Vancouver in 2013 and she and her husband were travelling and living part-time in Barcelona until Covid hit. Since then, with the arrival of four grandkids, they have entered a new more domestic chapter where she is loving her role as an engaged Gran, keeping busy setting up a family recreational home on the Sunshine Coast where everyone can gather. Joan is looking forward to visiting some friends in New England in June, incorporating a visit with Paddy Johnstone Clark who has been living in Maine for decades.

Charmaine Jones and Linda have spent time in Australia: visiting their son and his young family, travelling in a camper van with friends from Melbourne to Perth, and presenting at the celebrated Australian Parliament House (Canberra) for Friends of Autoimmunity in Parliament! Charmaine, celebrating her 50th anniversary since medical graduation, continues volunteer work with an organisation for patients with autoimmunity such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or inflammatory bowel disease. She and Linda spent last winter in BC with their daughter, her family and then headed to their Ontario island home for the summer.

Susan Gilles Crossley lives in a picturesque village in North West England and just celebrated her second wedding anniversary with second husband, Jim. They golf, travel, enjoy long walks, friends and family. Recently Susan and Jim sold their beloved 35 foot sailboat. For over five years, their vessel made it possible to explore the beautiful Western Isles of Scotland and Northern Ireland! Judy Welch Schuett is well, hoping to get into the garden this season. Highlights for Jane Stevens Westlake centre around her Toronto family, her two grandchildren, cottaging and volunteering at the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre. Sue Counsell has lived in a small town in SW New Mexico for 27 years. Life has been quite a ride: married, divorced, widowed with two beautiful kids and three grandchildren. Thanks to them, she has lots of games on her phone.

Vicky Dunbar Koudstaal and Erik are off to Newfoundland in June and Iceland in September – icy bookends to their summer. They are grateful to be able to travel and enjoy! Betsy Sumner loves living in Horseshoe Valley. Travelling as much as possible – Egypt and Jordan this past December, and Mexico again over this past winter. Carolyn Bennett, after over 20 years as a family doctor and 26 years as the MP for Toronto-St.Pauls, Carolyn has embarked on Act III in her appointment as the Canadian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark!

Simone Creed is grateful to have spent the winter in California with five siblings and their families. Her daughter works in a remote ski resort. She has 3 degrees but found love and happiness at Mammoth Lakes June Mountain Ski Resort as a ski patrol and is studying for her avalanche control blasting licence. Simone travelled to Palm Springs, Palm Desert and Laguna Beach golfing, playing pickleball and hiking. She’s taking all her children to Algonquin Park this summer to celebrate 75, and is grateful they are all happy, healthy with a great sense of humour. Anita Fallis Taylor has two new additions to the family. Third grandson, Charlie, in NYC and first granddaughter, Madeline, in Toronto. Margaret Pirrie Sibole is a retired Emergency Dept Nurse living in Belleair, Florida.  Margaret is spending the summer in Helena, Montana with daughter Devon (Jim) and 3 grand kiddos.  Looking forward to hiking and visiting more National Parks.  Also expecting family (from Toronto) to visit.

This is a reunion year so it will be wonderful to catch up in person.  We are spread all over Ontario and the world but we all have Havergal in common. Mary Ann Evans Turnbull has enjoyed the family tradition of skiing. Photography is more than a hobby, and travels through Yellowstone, Italy, Greece and France gave her lots of opportunity.  When in Ottawa, Mary Ann is involved with the local food bank, a number of charities, her Turnbull School and of course, her family.

Susan Inch Nicholson enjoys sharing locations between Muskoka and Fort Myers. She volunteers with dementia residents in a home, and plays lots of tennis.  Susan enjoys “making happy memories with our grandchildren.” Ann Woodland feels she has come out of hibernation to enjoy a riverboat trip on the Danube between Budapest and Vienna. She travelled with 60 Classical FM listeners – definitely a way to make friends. Joan Doran Innes took each of their five kids and families on Caribbean vacations – a wonderful way to spend quality time and build memories. She also enjoyed Alaska followed by the Rocky Mountaineer to Banff, New York, Nassau and Jamaica. The grandchildren are growing up fast with two at university age. And golf keeps her busy in summer.

Marianne Oundjian also had a huge travel year. She lives in a fascinating world of music, where she supports aspiring music students, and travels around the world enjoying festivals: Verbier (Switzerland), Rosendal (Bergan) and listens to concerts in Paris, Zurich, Geneva, London, Dubai and, of course, Toronto. A family wedding took her to Patagonia and, just to explore, Montenegro. Sydney Hedderich has been having health challenges but these are for the most part behind. She has engaged her travel bug by discovering pockets of rural Ontario and renting a cottage this summer near Ottawa. Deborah Casey visits her 103 year old mother regularly in Toronto. Her successful career in decorating keeps her creative and she, too, enjoys rounds of golf with friends. Debbie has been travelling with Gillian Duder Huntley to Spain, but also to Maine, southern France, Palm Desert and North Carolina. She is looking forward to the reunion.

Gillian Duder Huntley keeps herself very busy with friends enjoying cross country skiing, hiking, gardening, and is accomplished in Scottish country dancing. She visits family around the province and went on a fabulous trip with Deborah Casey to Spain. Carolyn Wilkie Hill enjoys classes every week through winter, cooking interesting dishes, walking with friends and still zooming with relatives and friends. She travelled to Malta and Sicily, and Chicago, often, to see grandchildren. Jennifer Watley Mackie is “grateful for family, good health and continued interest in trying new things.”  She enjoys yoga, quilting, pickleball and babysitting grandchildren! Andrya Solomon Schulte is healthy and enjoys golfing. She is planning a cruise to Alaska this summer.
