Class of 1983 bursary total as at August, 2024  |  $81,422

If we were shocked to celebrate “40 years on,” the reality check of hitting our 60s is daunting. At our September reunion, more than 40 gals, both in person and via video messages, shared these sentiments. From the responses we have received, and a scroll through social media, our classmates have embraced leadership roles in work, volunteer positions, Board commitments and life in general, all while caring for our families. If you glance briefly at Kim Thompson’s Facebook feed, Oakland, CA, is truly a better place because of this powerhouse philanthropic family. Paisley Currah’s latest book, “Sex is as Sex Does: Governing Transgender Identity”, has led to numerous speaking engagements and adds to his growing repertoire of thoughtful essays. Lucky are the students at Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York where Dr. Paisley Currah is a professor.

Michelle Koerner’s focus is on wildfire mitigation and coexistence working with UBC Forestry where a Centre for Wildfire Coexistence was established in 2023 to meet the urgent need for increased research in wildfire management. She continues her work in the arts as a board director at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Vice-Chair of the National Gallery of Canada Foundation and as the Chair of the Women’s Art Initiative at the AGO. Sybil Browne Taylor is semi-retired, working part-time as a marketing consultant and working on various boards as Corporate Secretary or Director. For the last four years, she has co-chaired the Frontline Support campaign that raised funds to launch the new full nursing degree program at Georgian College. Naomi Sedgwick Schafler continues to serve on numerous Boards and committees, largely driving positive impact for people with disabilities. Boarders keep socially connected! Sybil Browne Taylor speaks daily to many grads and they frequently get together in small or large groups. A highlight of the year was a trip to Italy with a stop in Milan to visit with Bianca Morandi.

This May, several Boarders walked the Sporting Life 10K together again. Family, friends and travel is a common thread to embrace this decade and catch the magic, to borrow Anne Langford Dotsikas’ mission. Anne plans to celebrate all year with adventures: visiting daughters, Kate (Paris, France) and Emily (Brooklyn, NYC), and travelling to see friends, including many HC classmates. Anne treasures the kick off that came in NYC with the queen of empowered aging herself, Karen Williams. Gail Johnson had a great ski trip to her local hill, Sun Peaks, BC, with Anne Harrop (and Bruce) and Karen Allen (and Tim). Recently, she enjoyed a week of sailing in the Gulf Islands off Victoria with Anne and Bruce.

Janet McAlpine Nestico made a surprise visit to celebrate Beth Morson’s 60th in Ottawa this spring.  Nancy Peterson and family took an incredible journey in January to Tanzania. Naomi has blended watercolour experience trips in the UK and golf tourneys in Europe. Don’t forget to reach out to Bianca Morandi in Milan, Kate Felstiner in London, and Lynne Archibald in Lisbon when you are “across the pond”. Some family notes: Michelle Koerner’s second daughter is graduating from Havergal in June (their first graduated in 2023) and Gail Johnson is grateful to Fiona Spizzirri who has acted as a “surrogate mother” to her daughter as she attends U of T. Many grads reported news of aging and lost parents, a very difficult emotional time as we march bravely into this decade.

40 years on, we definitely don’t have enough space to do justice to the wonderful Chronicle response this year – a sure sign of the excitement about our reunion in September. 40 years on seemed like just a lyric in 1984 but here we are ready to celebrate the ties that bind! As individual as our paths have been, we still have much in common at this stage: empty nests, aging parents, careers, retirement, new chapters, travel, the big 6-0, and pickleball! So many stories of rewarding careers: Barbara Fallon, the Associate Vice President of Research at U of T and a Canada Research Chair in Child Welfare; Jennifer Dolman, a law partner at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt; Lauren Israel Hendrickson practising family law in Toronto.

Liz White Fedryk at RBC for 38 years, currently in HR for Capital Markets; Nicolette Jones, a urologist in Ohio since 1988, now a Chief Medical Officer; Delia Grenville, Oregon’s representative for the Workplace Psychological Safety Act trying to make work better for younger generations; Sheena Robertson, the Artistic Director at Kick Start Arts, the non-profit she founded; Kelly Simpson Broadhurst supporting people facing end-of-life challenges; Nicky von Schroeter working to solve structural problems in carbon markets; Anne Hubbs McGlynn has spent 20+ years as a wildlife biologist with the Alberta government; Sandy Buik divides her time between being a land steward for the Bruce Trail and HR work with software companies.

Helene Clarkson celebrating a decade of her travel clothing line; and Graydon Moffat working on exciting new skincare innovations especially to support skin longevity. Others are embracing retirement in some form, finding time for travel, new and old hobbies, spending more time with those they love. Sheila Wilson retired from teaching, and Diana Hickey Carradine from Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada. Families take on a different shape at this stage. Many of us have said good-bye to parents or are caring for them. Our sincere condolences to Alison Zuckerman Jarvis, whose husband David died 2.5 years ago.  Alison’s children have been her rocks. And the empty nest is real for many. Aimee Hampson Pitman, Susan Blair Spratley and Margot Chapman Macdonnell are making that strange transition but embracing the flexibility to have new adventures. And so, it begins – here comes the bride or groom! Three (!) of Judy Merry’s children are getting married this year and Melinda Taylor is planning her first mother-of-the-bride outfit!

We heard from classmates near and far: Friederike von Essen von Niebelschutz sends her best from Germany where she and her husband have raised their 4 children and just welcomed their first grandchild; Nan Meech who has been living in Prague since 1991 and Margot Chapman Macdonnell who has been living in New York and then New Jersey since 1998; Sharon Armstrong who has been working with the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development for 30 years; Carol Mordy Saldanha who is living in Huntsville. Sandy Buik in Collingwood and Cindy Hayhurst who is now in St. Andrew’s-By-The-Sea, New Brunswick (her 13th move in 35 years of marriage!), living at Peacock Farm and cold plunging in the Bay of Fundy! Kelly Simpson Broadhurst put it so eloquently, “Life has woven its tapestry of ups and downs, twists and turns, yet here we stand, fortunate to reflect on four decades of experiences.”

Lisa Shoichet Leibowitz has been teaching Political Philosophy at Kenyon College (a small liberal arts college in Ohio) and has had students from UCC and Branksome Hall in her classes. Courtney Colman moved back to Toronto in October 2022. Currently the Chief Financial Officer of two film production and distribution companies, one based in Los Angeles and the other in Canada – Happy Accidents Media (LA) and Lighthouse Pictures (BC). Living in the Beaches and loving it! Travelled to the Greek Islands last summer and Peru (went to Machu Picchu – on the bucket list) in December with her son, Patrick. After years of sitting on the sidelines watching her daughter compete as a synchronized swimmer, Karen Finley has become a judge for provincial level competitions. Her daughter is now at Trent in Biomedical Science and her son continues to work and learn at Petite Thuet as a baker. Professionally she has moved into Ricoh’s software innovation group working with the market to define and develop new offerings for the North American corporation.

Alexandra MacLean moved to Minneapolis with family. She is CEO of Avenue Therapeutics, a biotech focusing on CNS drug development. It’s with great excitement that Cheri Grogan shares with her fellow Old Girls that she is now in the role as Head of School at Newton’s Grove School. NGS is a JK – 12 co-ed school in the north-west part of Toronto which houses a brand new 35,000 square foot state-of-the-art Athletic facility. Given Cheri’s love of sport, which was ignited while a student at Havergal, she feels very lucky to be part of this fast growing school where athletics is a priority. Catherine Johnston is keeping busy as Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel for Pet Value. Jackie Matear celebrated 30 years in London, UK in November of 2023 – what was meant to be an 18-month secondment! Jackie is still making the most of the generous European holiday allowance – went hiking in Sri Lanka in Feb and along the Portuguese coast over Easter, heading to Central Asia (Tajikistan) this summer. She had a great catch up with Kathy McKeever and Deanne Maw in Toronto last Christmas. She looks forward to seeing all her classmates at their 40th reunion next year.

Carol Anne Ruscica is still singing with Janet Stephenson in VRC Ensemble and Michelle Mehra Shouldice sings with VRC Meds! Now that they are empty nesters, Deanne Maw Counter enjoys spending about four months a year at her cottage in Huntsville. Last year, she was lucky enough to also have a fabulous 2-week trip to Lyon, France. Her oldest daughter Carling just got married! Now the focus is on wedding number two! Her middle daughter Kaia is getting married in July! Her youngest, Kelsey, will be starting her Master’s in bioarcheology at Bournemouth University in England this coming September. Suzanne Gordon enjoyed a family trip to Italy in summer 2023. Great to travel again. Cheered her daughter at the Head of the Charles regatta in Boston – with thanks to Lisa Buchan for explaining rowing to her and that you don’t miss out on the Charles!

Nancy Bell is enjoying her work at Alameda County Public Health, with the last 4 years focused on leading the COVID Investigations and Prevention Unit. This work has been a huge change from her pediatric occupational therapy career as well as an amazing challenge and privilege. Nancy and her husband love being by the ocean in Half Moon Bay, California and are happy to report that both of their children are living and working in the San Francisco Bay area. September of 2023 their daughter got married in Victoria BC and they’re happy to have stronger ties to Canada with their wonderful new Canadian son-in-law! Nancy is thankful for the class of ’85 friendships and marvels at the many opportunities to connect both in Toronto and SF – what an amazing group of women we have all become! Buffy Grand O’Driscoll is excited for the wedding of her oldest daughter Tory this summer!

Catherine (Cathy) Milne is still practicing employment law in Toronto and her firm continues to grow! No plans in sight at this point of retiring. She enjoys her weekends up on Georgian Bay, in the summer on their boat exploring the glorious scenery and in the other seasons in Thornbury gardening, snowboarding, hiking (with some HC pals) and playing pickleball (very novice). Cathy is looking forward to her son Harry’s wedding this summer, and hopefully some grandchildren soon – that may push her to retire! Stephanie Phelps’ big excitement this year is buying her first house at Bloor and Royal York and living with someone for the first time, her partner Daryl. They move in in May.

Elizabeth Henry Walford is expanding her Marketing & Customer Experience consulting business with new partners and employees, and frequently speaks at conferences across North America. She’s also a professor, teaching at Seneca @ York University. Elizabeth’s sons (22 & 19) are studying in Canada and the USA, and she’s celebrated 25 years of marriage. She’s fortunate to stay in touch with a number of her classmates – often getting her family together with Holly Allardyce’s. It’s getting crowded in Sarah Sharpe Renzoni’s and Mark’s Whistler home! After Ella’s graduation in May 2024, all 3 of their adult kids are back living in the Vancouver area and spend most weekends with their partners enjoying the activities available while all staying with us! All 3 are Engineering grads which is remarkable as Sarah’s unsure of whether she passed Calculus! Sarah is a volunteer Docent in beautiful Audain Museum, a gorgeous collection of BC art and touring shows. She and her family rent a cottage beside Heather Corcoran’s on Hernando Island which has been a great way to reconnect. Sarah’s had some lovely visits with classmates and HC grads as they head West.

Kaerynne Nakamura (Karen-Mai Pohlak): Kaerynn’s happy to say she’s pursuing’ ‘non-corporate’ art and design projects which works out so well with the addition of ‘Tosca’ (her 6th Weimaraner puppy. She was honestly looking for a cat or an Italian Greyhound, somehow it works. Eldest daughter Astrid is finishing her masters in violin performance at Rice – she’ll be playing with the HSO (Houston Symphony Orchestra) next year as well as Decamera in Houston, as well as a stint doing a talk in Geneva for the U.N. this summer in neuroscience in music. She became a CC fellow and won the use of one of the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank instruments for the next three years. Ursala, her youngest, will be finishing her undergrad at UofT (Vic college, like her mom) in anthropology and philosophy. She wants to take up ‘music production’ as a career. Melissa Ruth had a wonderful time this spring hosting Cathy McKeever’s daughter Sheena in NYC while she was visiting Columbia University where she will start her doctorate program this fall, just 20 or some blocks from Melissa.

Cathy Wright Southey is volunteering at the Churches-on-the-Hill food bank and serving on the management team. She continues to play lots of tennis, traveling to a new tennis club in Florida, and enjoying a 1-year-old puppy. Cathy Catto McKeever is still working in Biotech, approaching 35 years!  Enjoying catching up with fellow ’85-ers in Toronto, at musical events and lunches.  Recently met up with Deanne Maw Counter (visiting from NC) and Jackie Matear (visiting from London UK). Caroline Creighton’s years of planning are coming to fruition. Her eldest child is now a CPA and has been promoted to be a manager at her company. Her son is graduating with a degree in Structural Engineering from TMU this year, and already has a job lined up in Calgary beginning in June. Caroline has two years before retirement and her travel plans have already begun. She was in Iceland the summer of 2023 (with Tania Burrows) and went to visit Tania in March in Florida. In June, she’s heading to England and Spain and Greece in September.

We are so proud to report that two of our classmates have been appointed as judges! Stephanie Hickman was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador, Family Division in December 2023. Marin Chisholm Guy, Nina Abdelmessih; Michele Farrugia and Amy Gaskin were delighted to travel to St. John’s, Newfoundland to attend Stephanie’s swearing in ceremony. Allyson Whyte Nowak was appointed Justice of the Federal Court on January 26, 2024, and will be based in Toronto. We also wanted to include this note of appreciation from our Head Girl Marin Chisholm Guy. It truly speaks to the strength of the Havergal community and the ties that bind. “In early 2022, I lost my husband Geoffrey to cancer. I have been overwhelmed with the support from the Havergal community – my classmates from 1986, years above and below, and from members of the staff. I am coming out the other side now and I just wanted to express my gratitude. Thank you for your texts and emails, cards and phone calls. Thank you for showing up, for your help, love and support. This has been a reminder to me that Havergal is not just a school. It is a community of amazing women and lasting friendships, and I am beyond grateful to be part of it.” Our hearts continue to go out to Marin and congratulations from us all to Stephanie and Allyson.

Morrie McOuat’s daughter Maddy has earned her PhD in psychology from USF with a focus on eating disorders. She will be doing a 2-year fellowship at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego where she lives with her husband, Spencer. Morrie has decided to sell her house in Doylestown PA, throw everything into storage and be a nomad for a bit while she finds a new place to call home (probably close to her son Adam and his wife Jenn, near the Catskills in NY) She’s looking to build a house and use Adam’s skills as an architect to design something just for her. Sarah Weir: In September 2023, one of Sarah Weir’s daughters, Tamara, moved from Berlin to Toronto to start studying at University of Toronto while her twin, Sandra, began studying in Berlin. The family have been navigating this new cross-Atlantic distance and are thrilled that Tamara has been living just 5 minutes from Sarah’s father, getting the full benefit of time with the Toronto family.

Nicole Fisher is living in beautiful Victoria, BC, and by day, she’s a Death Doula, guiding souls through life’s end-of-life journey. Nicole’s still got a world map pinned to her wall, and she and her husband are always adding new stamps to their passports! This year they will add 7 new countries as they tour around the Baltic Sea. Very exciting year for Tara Smyth Saunders on a few fronts! Last March, she started a new job at Mission Services of London as the Director of Development & Communications. She sold her house in the Collingwood area and relocated to the London area in July. On her husband Michael’s birthday, their first grandchild made his debut, and they are smitten! She and Michael will be celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary this year!

Elizabeth Wilson Edge writes that life is still great with her 15-year-old son Jack, and 13-year-old daughter, Madigan, who is in grade 8 at HC and loving it! And her life is always enhanced with their 2 crazy Berners, Clover and Truffle! Susan Davidson Mazan and her husband live in Etobicoke. They have three boys, two at university, one in grade 11, and two Portuguese water dogs. Currently, she’s a second term councilor and Deputy Mayor of the Township of Muskoka Lakes where they have a second home.

Marnie Goldenberg has been in Vancouver for the last 23 years. She and her partner co-own a row of houses and have raised their kids in the community. Their eldest is in Toronto studying at TMU, the youngest has one year of high school to go. Marnie’s been practicing being an empty nester now so it doesn’t shock the system too much (but it likely will anyway).  Upcoming childless trips include hiking in Utah, backpacking in the Rockies and a canoe trip in Quetico Park. Currently working as the Senior Director of Programs for Take a Hike Youth Mental Health Foundation. Suzette Strong, a few highlights include her daughter’s graduation from Queen’s (June) and planning family trips to Italy & Greece. Catharine Heddle’s boys are 19 and 21, both out of the house now, so she and Terry are moving into a new phase of life. Terry will retire soon, but Catharine’s communications business is still going strong. She has taken up beekeeping and started an orchard at their farm north of Belleville but doesn’t get out there nearly as much as she’d like.

Zahava Uddin Webster thoroughly enjoyed skiing out West this winter (she found the snow!) and is already planning next year’s adventure. Nicole Petrov and her family continue to live in the Fergus area. Everyone is healthy and doing well. Nicole works part time at the University of Guelph Student Health Clinic with a focus on adolescent and young adult mental health. Her husband continues with his rural Family Practice in their community, and they try and find time to travel around with their bikes exploring North America. Nicole’s daughter Paige was married in 2022, and she and her husband live close by, in Guelph, where she has a Speech and Language Pathology practice. She recently adopted a rescue dog, making Nicole an official doggy grandmother lol! Her son Liam is now 23 and is working as a consultant mechanical engineer with a focus on healthcare facilities. Sarah Bull is still working in the investment industry at KJ Harrison. Her daughter is entering grade 12 at HC in September and her two boys are both loving university.

Jo Day is celebrating working five years at the Alzheimer Society of Peterborough Kawartha Lakes Northumberland Haliburton. She’s been busy organizing new projects and social recreational events for the members. Her kids are enjoying high-school and college and both working at camp this summer. Jo is going on a trip to Newfoundland this spring and is looking forward to some vacation time over the summer to visit with friends and go camping and canoeing. Tanya White continues to enjoy life in Austin, Texas, improving her two-step dancing skills and supporting the startup ecosystem. A few exciting trips in the past year: a cruise through Eastern Europe, scuba-diving in Fiji and TCI. Her photography efforts continue to expand (https://www.instagram.com/inplainsightphotos/) She writes for Eastside Magazine, a travel and lifestyle publication, where you can find her articles here: https://www.eastsideatx.com/

Julie McAlpine Jeffries is still working as associate general counsel at U of T. The girls are in grade 10 at Northern, third year at McGill, grad school (math) at Simon Fraser, and the eldest has launched with her own apartment and career in Toronto! Jo-Anne Matear took on a new role as Head of Sustainable Finance at the Ontario Securities Commission where she continues to lead the climate change and corporate diversity initiatives. Jo-Anne still tries to travel when she can – spending two weeks in Portugal with her mom (their first mother/daughter trip since before the pandemic) and three weeks exploring Guatemala and Belize. She’s looking forward to her class reunion this year. Tara O’Carroll, after her 30th Havergal Reunion, she ended up meeting a lovely Dutch guy, Willem, who was working in Saudi Arabia. Three years ago, Tara made the decision to join him in the Kingdom and all is going well!  She is working for the Saudi Sovereign Wealth Fund (PIF), where she’s responsible for Talent Management and spends weekends in the city or biking in the desert. Not sure how much longer they will be there but are in no rush to move back to cold and rainy Amsterdam.
